Jackson Hole Area
There are over 60 kilometers of groomed skating and classic lanes throughout the valley and just over Teton Pass. Whether you are looking for flat open fields, rolling aspen glades or dep evergreen woods, there are a variety of locations that can fulfill your desires.
Of course, don't forget about the multitude of community pathways that wind through the nooks and crannies of the valley either. Jacksons Parks and Recreation Department in partnership with Jackson Hole Community Pathways maintains six cross-country ski tracks, snow conditions permitting. A 10-kilometer loop in Cache Creek can be accessed from the Snow King Resort, although it begins at the Cache Creek trailhead parking lot. The groomers go eight kms up Game Creek, and four kms on the northeast side of the Snake River Levy. The Russ Garaman and the School Trails are groomed when theres adequate snowcover, as is the Melody Trail south of town. For the latest grooming conditions call the Parks and Recreation department at 733-5056.
Yellowstone National Park
In the winter, Yellowstone offers a variety of enjoyable and challenging trails for the cross country skier. You can find yourself heading through the frigid air, then suddenly become engulfed in hot steam escaping from deep within the Earth. You can surround yourself by a herd of bison, find elk mingling in as they paw the frozen ground in search of forage, or simply take in the vast open spaces and landscape around you. Cross country skiing in Yellowstone will bring you all these scenes.
All trails are marked, but new snow may make them a bit more difficult to find when untracked. The experience you have will depend upon the amount of planning and preparation you do prior to your trip. Stop at a visitor center or ski shop and discuss your trip in person. The staff is very helpful and provides current information on weather, trail, snow conditions, and alert you to any special winter hazards. Wood fires are not permitted. Overnight camping requires a free backcountry use permit which must be obtained in person from the Mammoth or Old Faithful Ranger Stations/or West, South, or East Entrance Stations. Call the park to obtain more information on obtaining a backcountry permit. For information phone Yellowstone National Park 307-344-7381.
